What is the difference between a valuation and an appraisal?
Valuation is defined as an estimation of something's worth, especially one given by an appraiser while appraisal is defined as an expert estimate of the value of something. These sound like very similar definitions; however, the words are not synonymous. A valuation is generally given verbally and is an estimate of an items fair market value. This is a useful tool for someone who is looking to sell personal property. An appraisal is also an opinion of value however, this information is then presented to a client in a professional, written report that can be relied upon by the client, the IRS and other intended users named in the report. People commonly need written appraisal reports for estate tax reporting, insurance purposes and for tax purposes when a charitable contribution in made.

Mary Rogers
Mary Bean Rogers was part of the circle of artists who helped influence the American Modernist movement during the early 20th century. She graduated from the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr in 1921 and attended the School of Industrial Art in Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where she met artist and future husband, Richard Rogers. She also formed connections with several blossoming art students in the Philadelphia region including noted Bucks County artist, Anne Goodell Lathrop and studied under the direction of Modernist painter, Arthur Carles, Jr. During the early years of her marriage, Bean and Rogers spent several summers at the Breckenridge School of Art in Gloucester, Mass. under the instruction of American painter Hugh Henry Breckenridge.
Mary and her husband lived in Norristown until they purchased the historic Daniel Hiester House in Sumneytown, Pa. The 1757 Georgian style house was home to Revolutionary War colonel, Statesman, and patriot Daniel Hiester. The house was included in the very first colonial map of Pennsylvania. Bean continued to paint throughout her life and was connected to an extensive network of local artists. In her personal belongings was found pamphlets for some of her exhibitions. Notably, she showed at the Art League of Washington D.C. in 1933 with such artists as John Fulton Folinsbee (1892-1972), Edward Shepard Hewitt (1877-1962), Frederick William Harer (1879 - 1947), and Bernard Badura (1896 - 1986) among others. In a personal correspondence between herself and Nancy Lathrop, it is mentioned that the renowned art collector Duncan Phillips compared her style to a Matisse.
Another noted exhibition was the Annual Water Color and Miniature Exhibition in 1928 where she exhibited a watercolor titled “Nantucket; No. 2.” She was a member of The Plastic Club in Philadelphia, an art club strictly for women artists. Bean exhibited her watercolor “Behind the Church” with The Plastic Club in their Thirtieth Annual Colour Exhibition along with Fern Coppedge (1883 - 1951), Wuanita Smith (1866 - 1959), Cora Smalley Brooks (1885 - 1930), Mildred Bunting Miller (1892 - 1964), and many other women artists. Other known places of exhibition include the Baltimore Water Color Club; Baltimore Museum of Art, First Annual Exhibition of The Boston Society of Independent Artists; Boston, Mass., Cheltenham Township Art Centre along with Walter Emerson Baum (1884 - 1956), and a personal exhibition at the Beach Theater; Cape May, NJ. Mary Bean and her husband were immersed in the Philadelphia art scene and in the development of American Modernism. Their involvement in the art world helped trailblaze the movement from Impressionism to Modernism. After being hidden away in storage for a number of years, Alderfer Auction is proud to present Mary Bean’s paintings for the first time in decades.
Richard Rogers
Richard Rogers (1903 – 1967) was part of the development of American Modernist art in the early 20th century. Throughout his career, he experimented with a variety of genres including Fauvism, Cubism, Expressionism, and even Abstract Expressionism. His strong use of colors and sometimes distortion of perspectives and forms highlight his artistic training by famous painters such as Arthur Carles and Hugh Breckenridge. Rogers graduated from Phoenixville High School and attended the School of Industrial Art in Philadelphia where he met fellow art student and future wife, Mary Bean. The two also studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under the instruction of Arthur Beecher Carles, Jr. He and his wife spent several summers as students in Gloucester Mass. at the Breckenridge School of Art under the instruction of Hugh Henry Breckenridge. Being a direct descendent of prominent Swedish, Welsh Quaker and Silesian Schwenkfelder founders in Pennsylvania, Rogers had a deep-rooted interest in local Pennsylvania history. He and his wife Mary purchased the historic Daniel Heister homestead in Sumneytown, Pa where they lived for many years. Rogers taught painting throughout the area and at the historic homestead, sometimes setting his classes up around the picturesque grounds.
Along with his wife, his paintings were exhibited throughout the major art centers of the East Coast. He was featured in the New Hope Art and Literature catalog and exhibited at the Boston Society of Independent Artists Annual Exhibit. He also taught classes in Fine Arts at the Chestnut Hill Creative Art Studio. Rogers passed away at the young age of 64. His artwork has been kept away from the public’s eye for almost 30 years. Alderfer Auction is proud to present pieces of his repertoire in their Fine Arts Auctions. Take advantage of this opportunity to own a piece of work by this missing puzzle piece of an artist whose studies and influence helped trailblaze the artistic movements from impressionism to modernism.

The Artistic Legacy of Curtis Jere: Masterful Metal Sculptures
Interests in a music genre is as diverse as an individual’s personality. Whether your interest is classic rock or classical, jazz, blue grass or hip hop, the instruments that create the music are the same. In many collector categories, the demographics of buyers play a strong influence in collecting trends. We have found this to be minimized in each category of musical Instruments, as the instruments and the craftsmen that have created them, have become the collected.
Alderfer Auction frequently hosts auctions of musical instruments with a range from strings to percussion, wood winds, brass and electronics. Located just 30 miles south of the Martin guitar factory, Alderfer has established a reputation for record prices in sales for these fine works of art. Artist-signed guitars are the quest of many guitar collectors due to the added value and artistry of many famous makers such as Martin, Gibson and Fender. If Classical instruments are your interest, Alderfer also frequently finds quality violins, violas, cellos and harps. If you beat to a different drum, no problem. Whether you are an accomplished drummer or a beginner, we frequently sell sets that will appeal to a variety of interests.
Seller Reviews
I had 3-types of interactions and they all were stellar…I just received my well-packaged items from a recent auction. I have had 3 types of interactions and they have all been stellar: pick-up at Alderfer; meeting this past weekend at the Philly Guitar Show booth; and this shipping experience. It was all wonderful. I also want to add that your iPhone App is wonderful. Thanks for everything. Now I have to find a way to buy one of these properties from you! [smile] Sincerely, W.T. 11/10/21
I was pleased with every aspect of my arrangement with you (the salesperson) and the Company…I just want to let you know, from the first time we met until the auction pick up yesterday everyone from your company was not only professional but very pleasant to be around. Your company should be very proud to have so many workers that do their work like they are happy to be doing it. Consignment Testimonials
Services are more extensive than converting “stuff” to cash…"I wish to thank you Brent personally and the staff of Alderfer Auction for the efficiency and integrity in the disposition of M.S.'s personal property. Fortunately her wishes were clearly stated, and she appointed an excellent attorney. In my role as Executor, I gained an appreciation for the role of your services which is more extensive than converting "stuff" to cash. It was less than three months from when you first visited the property to the second and final assistance with shipping, moving, storage, additional sorting and appraisals, advertising, and two auction venues. Particularly impressive was the recent fine arts catalogued auction. In addition to a full auction house, there were multiple online monitors and at least six or seven staffed phone lines receiving bids from around the world. Without exception, those who knew and loved this remarkable lady had nothing but compliments for the role of Alderfer Auction. You maximized the potential for her named non-profit beneficiary. Simply stated, thank you for your exemplary service. A special note of appreciation goes to the A-team of Brigid, Vicki and Bryce who so efficiently and effectively packaged the contents of her house." --R.B., Doylestown, PA

Joseph Hoover
Joseph Hoover graduated from West Chester University with a degree in Elementary Education and earned his Master’s in Music from Penn State University. He taught third-grade for twenty-seven years at Owen J Roberts. Hoover’s room was no ordinary classroom though. He kept it filled with rotated art which he tasked his students with creating on a monthly basis. His room was also decorated with random pets and a piano which he played for his students every day. Hoover and his wife also taught private music lessons and hosted a recital every summer at the Hoover House. The recital was always complemented by an art show in which he, his students, and his children would exhibit in.
Hoover retired from teaching in 1993 and devoted his time to creating art every single day at his home studio. His house sat at the end of a country road surrounded by flowers and woods. He trained for a year with James McFarland, the former President of the American Watercolor Society. Hoover was also inspired by his sister, Helen Hoover who was an artist.
Sometime around the mid nineteen nineties, Hoover started exhibiting his art at regional shows throughout Chester, Berks and Montgomery Counties. He was commissioned by the Town of Boyertown to paint one of their “Life Sized Bears” which formerly decorated the town back in the early part of this millennia. Today, Hoover has retired from his artistic endeavors at the age of ninety and spends his days reading, doing Sudoku puzzles, and feeding the birds that congregate around his front porch in the country valley.
Tom King
Tom King was born in 1925 in Philadelphia, Pa. He served during World War II in the US Air Corp. Following the war, he attended Temple University in Philadelphia and began his professional career as an illustrator for an advertising company where he designed images collectible gum cards. His career as an artist continued with freelance work as a commercial illustrator for large corporations such as AT&T, United Airlines, Chrysler Corp., and others. In 1976, he was commissioned for a poster for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey bicentennial circus poster. He also created an impressive oil on canvas of mastodons for the New Jersey State Museum’s display. Before his retirement from commercial work in 1989, King studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. After retirement, he devoted himself to painting social commentary works on issues that were most important to him. He listed these issues in a personal statement as “the inexorable metastasizing human population, prostitutional politics, the ever-lowering cultural and moral common denominators, the horrific pressures on endangered species, crime, and the billions of those whose religious aspirations seem to relegate this planet to a mere toilet stop on the way to heaven.” King’s art has been exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy Alumni Fellowship Shows; The State Museum of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg; The Allentown Art Museum; the Woodmere Museum, Phila.; Mystic Connecticut Marine Museum; Phillips Mill Annual Art Exhibition, New Hope; Experimental Aircraft Museum, Oshkosh, WI; Art in City Hall, Phila.; among others.

PA Impressionists
Alderfer Auction is situated within a community rich in art and conveniently located in the suburbs of Philadelphia. This area is home to the New Hope School artists and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. It has provided a backdrop for many local artists throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. With deep roots in "the home of art" filled with artist studios and galleries, Alderfer Auction has over 50 years experience, expertise and relationships with many of the PA artists and collectors.
Alderfer Auction specializes in the works of Pennsylvania Impressionists. Located just miles from New Hope, Bucks County and the Delaware River, this rich and diverse landscape provided popular subject matter for many of the Pennsylvania Impressionist painters and the painters of the New Hope School. These paintings embody the nature that surrounds us in the PA countryside often depicting recognizable stone buildings among flowering fields or snow-covered roads, bridges and streams. The movement began in the first half of the 20th century when landscape painter William Langson Lathrop moved to the town of New Hope in 1898 and founded a summer school for art.
The movement is often referred to as the “New Hope School” because artists in Bucks County and New Hope in particular, schooled, taught and produced the most well-known works. This can be deceiving, as many works were painted outside of the town of New Hope. One of the well known artists, often featured in our Fine Art & Collectors auctions, is Walter E. Baum. He not only worked as an artist, but also, as a teacher and educator forming the Baum School of Art and the Allentown Art Museum (click here to read about our record breaker Baum & other PA Impressionist artwork records). Because of Baum, the influence of the movement expanded beyond Bucks County into the Lehigh Valley, specifically into the Allentown area. It is within this region that the movement continued to thrive well into the 1940’s & 1950’s. Art historians regard this group of the Pennsylvania Impressionists as the Baum Circle.
Pennsylvania Impressionism married the style and ideology of French Impressionism with American Impressionism. It remained more “American” then other impressionist movements happening throughout America at that time. It stayed rooted in its focus on landscapes and retained the careful draftsmanship that most of its practitioners had learned at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. It is a hybrid of French and American ideas and not so much a full adoption of European ideas. Through its artistic practices it helped Americans gradually become familiar with many of the new artistic concepts coming from Europe in the late 19th and 20th centuries.

In-House Shipping
We Ship Select Items to Your Location Select items can be shipped to your home or business. Alderfer Auction may refuse shipping an item due to the size, weight, and fragile nature of certain items. We do not offer in-house shipping for: framed canvas paintings, glassware, statues/figurines made of glass, porcelain, or other breakable materials. We understand for some items there may be exceptions, however it is at the discretion of the shipping department to determine which items can be shipped and which items will require third-party shipping. Please inquire about international shipments.
Shipping FAQ’s
What kind of items do we recommend third party shipping for?
- framed/unframed artwork - dishes (glass, ceramic, etc) - furniture - lamps - statues - fishing rods - bisque or porcelain dolls with high value - taxidermy - vases - clocks and radios - fragile items or items with high value - very large or heavy items
Why can’t you ship my item? While we try to provide shipping for most items that our auctions offer, some items are more fragile in nature and we are more comfortable with a third party shipper to pack your items.
Who do we use to ship? We provide in-house shipping through USPS and FedEx. Third party shippers include UPS and other local shippers.
How do I get my items shipped? Shipping is an extra-fee service that Alderfer Auction provides and customers must request to have their items shipped. We never assume that you want shipping to accommodate address changes and those who are willing to pick up their items. You can contact us by emailing shipping@alderferauction.com, by submitting a shipping request form on our website, or by calling 215-393-3000 and asking for the shipping department.
What are your handling fees? Handling fees are based on how long the packaging process takes and can be anywhere from $3.00 & up. Firearm shipments have a flat handling fee of $25.00 for the 1st long gun and $10.00 for each additional long gun. There is an $11.00 flat handling fee for the 1st hand gun and $6.00 for each additional handgun.
How do I pay for shipping? If you request us to ship your item and we have your credit card on file, we will use that card for the shipping price unless otherwise specified. If we do not have your card on file, we will email you the shipping and handling cost with payment options.
Will I receive a tracking number? Yes, if you provided an email address to us, you will receive a tracking number through either USPS or FedEx. If for some reason you do not receive one, contact us and we will be happy to look up your tracking number and email it to you.
How are shipping costs determined? Costs are determined by box size, weight and insurance value.
Do you insure packages? We automatically insure any package that has a value over $100.00. If you choose to waive the insurance to lower the cost, you must send an email to shipping@alderferauction.com to release us from any responsibility of damage that could potentially occur during shipment.
Do you offer express shipping? Typically we do not offer expressing shipping except in rare cases. We will not offer express shipping on any gold or expensive jewelry.
Do you provide international shipping? Yes, we will provide international shipping for items that do not have a high value. Each country has different value limits through the USPS. We do not have an export license, so if we are unable to provide in-house shipping on your item, we will refer you to a third party shipper who can assist you.
How do third party shippers work? Once you contact a third party, please let us know who to release your items to by emailing shipping@alderferauction.com or by calling 215-393-3000. Alderfer Auction and the third party will then make arrangements for them to pick up your items. Once the items leave our auction house, the third party is responsible for packaging, shipping and arranging payments with you. You should also receive a tracking number through them.

Making the decision to sell your home is the first step into a new chapter of life. Whether you're downsizing, relocating, transitioning to retirement living, or motivated by economic factors, you're faced with numerous questions: "Where do I begin? Who should I contact? How do I handle the belongings I won't be taking with me? What is my home worth?" Alderfer Auction is here to guide you from start to finish, ensuring a stress-free process that maximizes the value of your most significant assets.
Real Estate: Selling Your Home with Expertise and Ease
When it's time to sell your most valuable asset - your home - Alderfer Auction's Real Estate Specialists are ready to guide you through the selling of your property. After evaluating your home and conducting neighborhood comparables, we'll develop a customized strategy, including a timeline tailored to your needs.
The Auction Advantage: Control, Efficiency and Value
We have two methods of selling your property by Auction and Traditional Listings. Choosing to sell your real estate at auction empowers you to set the terms, conditions and timelines to allow for packing, moving and the sale of personal property. Properties are sold without contingencies in "as-in" condition, eliminating the need for repairs or the uncertainty of inspections. This method eliminates post-auction negotiations, as the highest bidder wins the property. Our comprehensive marketing strategy includes professional photography, virtual tours, online listings, search engine optimization, and targeted advertising, drawing serious buyers to your property. We conduct open houses and provide detailed Property Information Packets, ensuring transparency and informed bidding. Your property is listed on the realtor database of Bright MLS, as well as, Zillow, Realtor.com and other extended online real estate search directories.
A key benefit of the auction method is that the seller receives 100% of the sales price, with the buyer covering the commission. Alderfer Auction is committed to a smooth settlement process, minimizing any additional costs and providing a single point of contact throughout the entire process. This personalized support ensures you have a knowledgeable ally ready to answer your questions every step of the way.
The Traditional Listing Approach
Alderfer Auction & Realty has licensed realtors to list your property using the traditional method.

Sell FAQ’s
Why choose the auction method to sell my home?
When selling via auction, the seller receives 100% of the bid price. Commission is paid by the buyer.
The auction process is a true “as is” sale with no buyer contingencies permitted, allowing for a seamless flow from auction to settlement.
The buyer is responsible for any municipality requirements for the transfer of the property, as well as any settlement fees.
If the home is still occupied, showings will be limited to scheduled open houses.
Seller sets the auction schedule to work within their time frame.
Am I able to sell my home if I still have a mortgage? Yes, as long as the value of the property does not exceed the amount of the outstanding loans. Any remaining mortgage or loan balances will be paid off at settlement.
What is the timing of the auction process?
We work with you, the seller, to create an auction schedule where together we set dates for open houses, the auction and settlement.
As soon as you are ready to proceed, our Real Estate Team will take photos and a video tour of the home and property.
The property will then be uploaded to Bright Multiple List Service, Realtor.com, Zillow, Trulia and other online real estate search sites. Additionally, Alderfer Auction includes extensive marketing with global online and targeted advertising, email marketing, website and app, auction search directories, search engine optimization, social channels, photography, drone, 360 and videos where applicable, and more.
Open houses and the auction will take place over the course of 2-3 weeks.
Our Real Estate Team will work with you and the buyer to ensure a smooth transition to the settlement table, 45 days or less from the date of the auction.
How and when will potential buyers see the property?
Scheduled open houses will be staffed by our Real Estate Team. Additionally, if the home is vacant, real estate agents will be able to schedule appointments to show their clients.
The auction method allows buyers to view the property more than once prior to the auction. Buyers may bring family, contractors or inspectors to assist them in making an educated decision about their purchase.
Auction eliminates the need for buyers to rush to place an offer. Auction also eliminates the need for sellers to choose an offer after comparing inspection or other contingencies or lending requirements. At auction, there are no buyer contingences. All sales are “as is.” The highest bidder on auction day wins!

We welcome you to bring a contractor or inspector to thee viewings to help you make an informed decision.
3. Financing and Pre-Approval Contrary to the myth that auctions are cash-only transactions, properties sold through Alderfer Auction are eligible for financing through the typical mortgage lending process. Obtaining pre-approval for a conventional loan is a crucial step, indicating the maximum bid you can place without exceeding your loan amount. This preparation is vital, as auctions eliminate mortgage or appraisal contingencies and require certified funds for registration and bidding.
4. Auction Day: Live and Online Bidding The excitement builds on auction day, with attendees and online participants making final preparations. Whether the auction is live, online, or a combination of both, all bidders must demonstrate they have the necessary certified funds. This ensures a fair and equal opportunity for all interested parties to purchase the property. Remember, auctions move quickly, typically concluding within 20 minutes, so punctuality is key.
5. Winning, Paperwork, and Settlement You've won! Buyer and Seller will execute the Purchase and Sale Agreement, and the certified funds become your deposit. You will now initiate the mortgage process. Our Real Estate Specialist will work with your lender and our title company to ensure a smooth process from the day of auction to the day of settlement. We are here to answer your questions at every turn!
Congratulations! With keys in hand, welcome to your New Home!

1. Bidding Qualifications
Live and Online Bidding
Live and Online Auctions are conducted in front of a live audience. During these events each item presented in the auction is also available for bidding in an online venue hosted by a third party provider. While the auctioneer is receiving bids from an assembled audience, phone and absentee bidders, the auctioneer is also taking bids from bidders who are bidding through the third-party providers in real time or by advance bidding. Following the auction the successful bidders are notified and payment arrangements are made; applicable buyer’s premium applies.
At its discretion, Alderfer Auction may also accept bids from approved internet bidders. Alderfer Auction or any of its staff shall not be held responsible or liable for any human or technical bidding errors, or internet bidding system shutdowns that may occur.
Online Only Bidding
Alderfer Auction sometimes uses the services of a third party auction platform for online bidding. Please refer to third party website for how to register and bid online. Buyer is responsible for all online bidding. Alderfer Auction cannot place bids for the buyer as the buyer must properly register and bid through the third party platform.
At its discretion, Alderfer Auction may also accept bids from approved internet bidders. Alderfer Auction or any of its staff shall not be held responsible or liable for any human or technical bidding errors, or internet bidding system shutdowns that may occur.
Live Online Auctions (Online Only Auction with Multiple Bidding Platforms)
Auction is open for pre-bidding until the start of the auction at which time pre-bidding will cease and the auction will go live at the auction center (no live audience, just our auctioneer and auction staff). When the auction goes live, lots will be sold one at a time, in numerical order, by a live auctioneer who will be taking bids from multiple online bidding platforms, absentee and phone bids. During pre-bidding you are able to submit a max (maximum) bid. The bidding platform or our auction staff will bid on your behalf up to the maximum bid that you have entered. Once the auction goes live if you wish to increase your bid you will have to wait until that lot opens for bidding and enter any additional bids manually.
Absentee Bidding For those unable to attend the auction, Alderfer Auction offers the absentee bid service as a convenience to our patrons. Alderfer Auction will not be held responsible for error or failure to execute the bid(s). Absentee bids must be in writing and a fifty dollar ($50) minimum bid is required per item.
Phone Bidding Phone bids must be in writing. All phone bids are required to open at $250 or half of the published estimate (whichever is greater and no less than $250). We suggest that phone and absentee bids be made 24 hours in advance to allow time for processing.
Everyone leaving an absentee/phone bid must be willing to leave their credit card number to assure payment of a successful bid(s) is received by the end of the next day following an auction. Illegible bid(s) will be disregarded. Applicable sales tax will be added to the sales total unless a tax-exempt number is on file in our office by the day of the auction. Applicable Buyer’s Premium will be added to each purchase. Buyer is responsible for scheduling pickup or shipping arrangements. Bids are executed in competition with the audience on an alternate basis. Due to uncertainties of bidding, a lot may sell to the audience for the same amount authorized by the absentee bid. To avoid this possibility, the absentee bidder may authorize Alderfer Auction to increase their bid by one increment by placing a (+) sign beside the bid price. Merchandise is to be removed from the Auction location during the specific auction’s stated pick-up dates and times. Alderfer Auction offers the absentee/phone bid service as a convenience to our patrons who are unable to attend the auction or bid online. Alderfer Auction will not be held responsible for error or failure to execute the bid. All items are sold “as is” without warranty or guarantee.
Alderfer Auction shall have the right to accept absentee and phone bids for any items consigned for any particular auction. Alderfer Auction reserves the right not to execute any absentee bid at its discretion and to have no liability for any inadvertent failure to execute any such bids.
2. Buyer’s Premium, Sales Tax & Payment
Applicable buyer’s premium is applied per auction. The hammer price, buyer’s premium and sales tax shall be added together to reach the Total Price for an item.
Successful online bidders, who bid through a third-party online bidding platform, will be assessed a 5% surcharge on the Total Price. This charge offsets the fee collected by the third-party platform. For more information regarding this charge please see third party website for terms.
PA residents pay 6% sales tax unless a Tax-Exempt Form is on file with Alderfer Auction. Please note when bidding on Live Auctioneers third-party platform and are an out-of-state buyer: if you live in a state that Live Auctioneers has sales tax nexus in, Live Auctioneers will include sales tax unless you have a valid tax exemption certificate on file with Live Auctioneers.

The team of Appraisers at Alderfer Auction has a unique advantage over most other appraisers. Our appraisers are observing market changes and trends daily through the ever-changing landscape of the market by selling collections and estates at auction. Alderfer Auction has built relationships with lawyers, banks, institutions, and individuals who need to settle an estate, dissolve a partnership, have a collection evaluated for insurance, make a charitable contribution, or have a market valuation of their collection.
Want to request an appraisal?
APPRAISAL vs. VALUATION
A Valuation is defined as an estimation of something's worth, especially one given by a team of specialists, while appraisal is defined as an expert estimate of the value of something. These sound like very similar definitions; however, the words are not synonymous. A valuation is generally given verbally and is an estimate of an item’s fair market value. This is a useful tool for someone who is looking to sell personal property. We have a team of specialists who will give estimates of items based on their experience on comparable sales at auction.
An appraisal is also an opinion of value; however, this information is then presented to the client in a professional, written report that can be relied upon by the client, the IRS and other intended users named in the report. People commonly need written appraisal reports for estate tax reporting, insurance purposes and for tax purposes when a charitable contribution is made.
Appraisals are formal, written reports that are impartial and objective. They are billed to the client at an hourly rate. WE COVER YOUR APPRAISAL NEEDS
Appraisals are needed for various reasons. Some are needed by clients and the IRS for estate tax purposes or for a charitable contribution. In these cases, the values used are Fair Market Value. Fair Market Value (FMV) is defined as the price at which a property would change hands between a willing buyer and a willing seller.
For Estate Tax appraisals, the IRS has very specific guidelines on what information they need and who can provide the appraisal. To ensure the needs of our client meet the IRS requirements, all our reports are USPAP compliant.
Others need an appraisal report for insurance purposes so that their possessions are properly insured. This type of report uses Retail Replacement Value. Retail Replacement Value (RRV) is defined as the amount it would cost to replace an item with one of similar and like quality, purchased in the most appropriate marketplace in a limited amount of time.
For Firearms: The Alderfer Auction Firearm Specialists can provide written appraisals to reflect fair market value for estates, insurance purposes, equitable distribution, and family division reasons.
We offer many Types of Written Appraisal Reports including:
Estate tax or planning
Insurance
Charitable Contribution or Gift
Damage or Loss of Value
Family Division
Equitable Distribution

We understand computers can be confusing and frustrating. Below are a few steps that will help you to navigate the bidding process.
Step 1. Use a Qualified Browser
The browser is the door that connects your computer or device to the world-wide web.
We have found that using Internet Explorer (see the icon below) is NOT the optimal browser. This browser is prone to viruses and will not allow you to access certain parts of the bidding experience.
Google Chrome, Firefox, and Safari (see the icons below) are excellent choices for a browser. Our system has been optimized to function on all three of these.
Step 2. Bid via Desktop or App
The mobile experience may differ slightly from the desktop or PC experience. In either case, click on the "Bid Online Now" link to enter the auction

While the auctioneer is receiving bids from an assembled audience, the auctioneer is also taking bids from bidders who are bidding through the Alderfer Online Bidding platform or third-party providers in real time or by advance bidding. Following the auction, the successful bidders are notified by email and payment arrangements are made; applicable buyer’s premium applies.
4. Live Online Auctions (Online Only Auction with Multiple Bidding Platforms):

Dolls, Toys and trains
Toy collections are amongst the most nostalgic auctions we host. Toys connect us to our childhood and evoke many fond memories. Toy collecting is an ever-changing market as each demographic collects per their past. The strength of Alderfer is the ability to adapt and change with market trends. Alderfer frequently sells collections of cast iron toys and banks, tin litho wind ups, early battery ops, trains and early plastic to injection molded action figures of the 20th century.
Dolls come in many forms from G.I. Joe, Barbie and American Girl, Lenci to Madame Alexander, Armand Marseille and Jumeau. Much like the toy market, every segment of the demographic and corner of the world, collects according to their memories of the past, quality, maker and scarcity.
In addition Vintage Holiday decorations and figures are a frequent complement to our doll and toy auctions. Halloween, Christmas, Thanksgiving and Valentines are ever increasing in popularity and demand.

Coin Auctions
Coin collecting is among the earliest forms of collecting dating back to Ancient Rome; it is only fitting that it be paired with one of the earliest forms of selling goods and services. Today coins are among the top grossing items sold at public auction in the U.S. and around the world.
Alderfer Auction sells a variety of coins and currency from collections and estates. The collector/investor market places worth on the numismatic value of the coins or currency in addition to the gold or silver value. The value of coins and currency is based on its condition, minting, production limits and survivorship. Alderfer Auction carefully reviews each coin to determine its market value at auction. Frequently, coins are sold as individual items while others may be lotted to appeal to the particular market. These are some of the many benefits of selling coins at auction including quality of merchandise, exposure through mass media marketing, diversity of buyers through simulcast auctions and reputation. Alderfer Auction offers buyers a pre-auction preview for discriminating collectors to evaluate and discern the purchases.
Alderfer Auction sells vehicles and equipment for those looking for old-stock rotation, inventory reduction or an outlet for preowned cars or equipment. The auction method frees up cash flow and allows a person to sell inventory quickly at the highest fair market price.
Buying Vehicles - An Invitation for a Thorough Evaluation
We value the importance of trust and transparency in the auction process. Therefore, we warmly welcome you to bring your mechanic to evaluate the car prior to the auction. This opportunity for a thorough inspection and test drive on premises ensures that both buyers and sellers are fully informed and confident in the value and condition of the vehicle.

The FP-45 Liberator: A Crude But Effective Weapon of Resistance
